About the project

Southwark Rooms is a free, online art project for Southwark residents who have been staying at home during Covid-19. It is an opportunity to create something special and share it with your neighbours. Welcome!

After almost 5 months of UK lockdown, the restrictions have eased and lots of us are re-entering public life. Southwark Rooms is a project that invites you to take a moment to reflect on the rooms that you’ve been living in throughout this remarkable time and make an artwork about your space.

We've already had lots of entries to our virtual gallery and lots of people have said they've enjoyed the project. For this reason we are reopening the project and accepting new entries to the gallery!
Making your artwork

To get started, have a think about a room within your home. It could be your bedroom, kitchen, living room or bathroom. What's it like in there? How has it felt to spend so much time in this space? What's special about it for you? How has your connection to it changed? What's the story of your room?

Once you have had some thoughts, try making an artwork about your ideas. Don't pressure yourself to make something 'professional', just do whatever feels good. You could make a drawing, painting, rubbing, photograph, poem, film, model, sound recording or digital reconstruction – anything! To get your creative juices flowing, check out the project inspiration page.

For those who need a bit of extra help there will be some local artists onboard with this project who will be sharing tips and offering guidance via this website as time goes on. You can also call the project phone number and speak to an artist who can help you.

Once you have made your artwork, all you need to do is photograph it and send it to us using the contact details below:
